Cllr Robert King has been the Labour and Co-operative councillor for Egham Hythe ward since 2019 and Co-Leader of Runnymede Borough Council since 2024. When elected to Surrey County Council in 2021, he became the first non-Conservative to hold Egham division — and later the first Labour council leader in Surrey’s history, as Co-Leader of Runnymede within the Alliance after 51 years of Conservative rule.
As Local Government Reorganisation draws his current roles to a close in March 2027, Robert has reflected on the work carried out for residents across Egham and Pooley Green.
- £3.2 million of CIL infrastructure funding directed into St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey — beginning the upgrading of the Cardiac Catheter Lab and Surrey’s only Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, caring for some of the smallest and sickest babies in our region.
- Beginning the build of a proper health centre for Egham Hythe, giving the community the facilities it has long deserved.
- Driving road funding into the Egham division — delivering resurfacing and pavement improvements across the area.
- New play equipment for children in Pooley Green, investing in the next generation of our community.
- A new local financial support service to help the most vulnerable residents when they need it most.
- Hauling Runnymede Borough Council back from the edge of financial collapse, cutting the council’s debt by tens of millions of pounds in just two years.
It has been the privilege of a lifetime serving the people of Egham and Pooley Green. Robert will continue to serve until March 2027, when Runnymede Borough Council hands over its powers to the new West Surrey Council. He adds: “I am deeply grateful and will continue to serve until that point — but here is my final ask.”
Robert is asking residents to vote for two fantastic local people for Egham Ward on the new West Surrey Council — Jack Nayak and Cai Parry, both residents of Egham, standing for Egham.
